What your radon test result means
Radon is measured in picocuries per liter of air (pCi/L). The US EPA's action level is 4 pCi/L: at or above that, it recommends fixing your home. Between 2 and 4 pCi/L, it recommends considering a fix, since there's no known safe level.
How to do it
- Below 2 pCi/L: generally no action needed. Consider retesting every few years or after renovations.
- 2 to 4 pCi/L: consider mitigation, especially if you spend a lot of time in the lowest level.
- 4 pCi/L or higher: the EPA recommends mitigation. Get quotes from certified contractors.
- Very high results: don't panic, but act promptly. Mitigation can reduce even very high levels substantially.
